All Wrestlers / WWE Legends / Edge
Edge is the greatest opportunist in wrestling history — a man who could take any weakness, any distraction, any weapon, and turn it into a world championship. From his early days as a vampire-obsessed weirdo in The Brood to his legendary tag team with Christian to his breakout as “The Rated-R Superstar,” Edge redefined what a main event heel could be. Rated PG era? Edge was the guy doing live sex celebrations, crashing weddings, and spearing anyone who got in his way. And when a neck injury forced him into early retirement at age 37 (2011), the wrestling world mourned. Then, nine years later, he did the impossible: he returned at the 2020 Royal Rumble, entering at #21 to one of the loudest pops in history. For the full story of his shocking comeback, see our Edge’s Return at the 2020 Royal Rumble.
Born Adam Copeland in Orangeville, Ontario, he grew up a wrestling fanatic. He trained at the legendary “Sully’s Gym” with Ron Hutchison and debuted on the Canadian indies. He formed a tag team with his best friend Christian (Jay Reso), and the duo became mainstays of the WWE tag division after signing in 1998. As singles competitors, both men broke out. Edge won the first-ever Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 21 (2005), then cashed in on John Cena to win his first WWE Championship — kicking off the “Rated-R Superstar” gimmick. From there, he had classic feuds with Cena, The Undertaker, Mick Foley, and Batista. His career was cut short by spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spine) in 2011, but he returned after a decade thanks to modern medicine and his own determination. The First Money in the Bank Winner
At WrestleMania 21, Edge won the first-ever Money in the Bank ladder match by retrieving the briefcase hanging above the ring (defeating Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Christian, Shelton Benjamin, and Kane). The MITB contract allowed him to challenge for any world title at any time. He held the briefcase for 280 days — the second-longest in history — before cashing in on John Cena at New Year’s Revolution 2006, becoming WWE Champion. That single moment defined his “ultimate opportunist” character. For more, see Money in the Bank: Complete History of Cash-Ins.
Signature Moves & Finishing Techniques
Edge’s move set was a mix of high-flying, hardcore, and technical wrestling. His spear was among the best, and his finishing combination was fluid.

The TLC Revolution — Edge & Christian, Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz
Edge, along with Christian, was part of the greatest tag team trilogy in history: the TLC matches (Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) with The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz. At WrestleMania 2000 (Triangle Ladder match), SummerSlam 2000 (first official TLC), and WrestleMania X-Seven (the iconic TLC match that ended with Edge spearing Jeff Hardy from a ladder), these matches redefined tag team wrestling. Edge’s willingness to take insane bumps (falling off ladders, through tables) made him a fan favorite. For a deep dive into these matches, see our The Complete History of TLC Matches.
Beyond the Ring — Acting, AEW & Personal Life
Television & Film
Edge has appeared as a guest star on several TV shows: Vikings (as a recurring character), Flash (as a villain), and Dark Rising (a TV movie). He also voices characters in video games (his likeness in WWE 2K series).
AEW Run (as Adam Copeland)
After his WWE contract expired, Edge signed with AEW in October 2023, debuting at WrestleDream. He now wrestles under his real name, Adam Copeland, and has been feuding with Christian Cage (his real-life best friend). He is currently with AEW and has stated he will likely retire there.
Podcast
Edge co-hosts a podcast, “E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness” (with Christian) — a mix of wrestling talk, comedy, and nostalgia. He also wrote a best-selling cookbook with his wife, Beth Phoenix.
Personal Life
Edge married fellow Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix in 2016. They have two daughters. Beth Phoenix was a major star in the Divas era, and the couple often appears together at wrestling conventions. Edge previously was married to a woman named Allanah. He is a passionate musician (plays guitar and drums) and has performed on televised wrestling shows (including playing his own entrance music on a viking violin for a WrestleMania match?). He has also written a cookbook with Beth (Gourmet Meals for the Busy Family). Edge is a survivor of chronic pain; his neck injury forced him to re-learn how to walk and lift weights. He has spoken openly about the mental health challenges of forced retirement. For more, read Edge & Beth Phoenix: A Conversation on Family, Wrestling & Retirement.
Legacy & Impact on Professional Wrestling
Edge is one of the most beloved and respected wrestlers of his generation. He was the “Ultimate Opportunist” — a man who could snatch victory from any situation, whether by cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase or by using a steel chair. His return from a career-ending injury was nothing short of miraculous, inspiring other wrestlers with neck problems to seek treatment. As a tag team specialist, he helped revolutionize the business. As a singles star, he headlined WrestleMania and became a Grand Slam Champion. He is a Hall of Famer who came back to wrestle again — an unprecedented feat.
What Edge Changed in Wrestling
- Mastered the “opportunistic heel” gimmick — he won titles by being smart, not just strong.
- Elevated the TLC match to an art form — he took insane risks for the sake of entertainment.
- Proved that a wrestler could return from “forced retirement” — his 2020 comeback is legendary.
- Innovated the Money in the Bank cash-in — his first cash-in set the blueprint for everyone else.
- Brought a hardcore edge (pun intended) to the PG era — his feuds were often violent and psychological.
Edge was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012 (by Christian). He is widely considered one of the top wrestlers of the 2000s and one of the greatest tag team wrestlers of all time. For our ranking, see Greatest Wrestlers of All Time: Definitive Ranking and Best Tag Team Wrestlers in History.
I was supposed to be dead. I was supposed to be in a wheelchair. Instead, I’m standing here, doing what I love. That’s not luck. That’s a miracle.
