All Wrestlers / WWE Legends / Kane
If The Undertaker was the supernatural overlord of darkness, Kane was his demonic brother — a masked, fire-breathing monster of pure destruction. Few characters in wrestling history have been as terrifying or as enduring as Kane. Debuting at Badd Blood: In Your House (1997) by tearing off the door of the first-ever Hell in a Cell and attacking The Undertaker, Kane instantly became one of the most compelling figures in the industry. Over the next two decades, he evolved from a silent, disfigured monster to a comedic “Corporate Kane” in a suit, then back to the demon. Along the way, he won world championships, tag titles with his brother (the Brothers of Destruction), and became a beloved fan favorite. For a full history of the Undertaker-Kane saga, see our Brothers of Destruction: The Complete History.
Glenn Jacobs was born on a US Air Force base in Spain but grew up in Missouri. He played football at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State) before turning to wrestling. He worked the independents under various names (including “Angus King” and “The Christmas Creature” — yes, really) before signing with WWE in 1995. Initially given the gimmick “Isaac Yankem, DDS” (a deranged dentist for Jerry Lawler), and later “Fake Diesel” (after Kevin Nash left), his career seemed doomed. Then in 1997, WWE repackaged him as Kane — the burned, scarred younger brother of The Undertaker, who blamed his brother for the fire that disfigured him. The character was an instant hit. Kane’s mask, his fire entrance, his eerie silence — he became one of the most successful monster characters in wrestling history. I am the devil’s favorite demon. And I will destroy you.

Championship History
Kane may have only held two world championships, but his championship résumé includes multiple tag team reigns and the ECW Title.

The 24-Hour WWE Champion
When Kane won the WWE Championship from Stone Cold Steve Austin at King of the Ring 1998 (in a first blood match, thanks to Mankind’s interference), the crowd erupted. It was one of the most shocking title changes of the Attitude Era. Sadly, Kane lost the title back to Austin on the next night’s Raw. His reign lasted less than 24 hours — one of the shortest in WWE history. But he would later capture the World Heavyweight Championship in 2010 and hold it for 154 days, validating his status as a main event player. For more on short title reigns, see Shortest WWE Championship Reigns in History.
Signature Moves & Finishing Techniques
Kane’s moves were built around power and intimidation. His ring psychology — slow, methodical, then explosive — made him a unique monster.

The Mask & The Fire — An Iconic Gimmick
Kane’s original mask (1997) was a full, black-and-red mask with a gray “face” covering the left side (to simulate burns). Over the years, the mask evolved: more white, more red, more “stylized.” His entrance — walking slowly, raising his arms, and having fire shoot from the four ring posts — is arguably the most memorable entrance in WWE history (along with The Undertaker’s). Even after he unmasked (2003), the character retained the fire entrance. For a gallery of Kane’s masks through the years, see our The Evolution of Kane’s Mask: 1997–Present.
Beyond the Ring — Mayor Glenn Jacobs
After retiring from full-time wrestling, Glenn Jacobs (Kane) successfully ran for mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. He was elected in 2018 (as a Republican) and re-elected in 2022. Unlike many celebrity politicians, Jacobs takes the job seriously — he has focused on infrastructure, fiscal conservatism, and COVID-19 response (though his libertarian views on masks and lockdowns made headlines). He also writes a column on economics for a local paper. For more on his political views and accomplishments, read our Glenn Jacobs: The Wrestling Mayor of Knox County.
Personal Life
Glenn Jacobs has been married to Crystal Rosa since 1995; they have two daughters. He is known for being one of the most educated wrestlers in WWE history (college degree). He is a libertarian and often advocates for free markets and limited government. Jacobs does not use the name “Kane” in his political career, preferring “Glenn Jacobs.” He is also a noted fan of fantasy and science fiction (he plays D&D). He has been featured in documentaries about wrestling and politics. For more, see Five Questions with Mayor Glenn Jacobs.
Legacy & Impact on Professional Wrestling
Kane is one of the most successful monster characters of all time. He was terrifying without being cartoonish (most of the time). His longevity — over 25 years in WWE — is remarkable for a “monster” gimmick, which usually have a short shelf life. He successfully transitioned from silent killer to comedic character (Team Hell No) and back to demon. And he never broke kayfabe while in the mask. His legacy includes the Brothers of Destruction, the fire entrance, and some surprisingly heartfelt moments (the reunion with Daniel Bryan).
What Kane Changed in Wrestling
- Perfected the “monster with a heart” — he could be evil but also tragic.
- Created the most dramatic entrance fire display — every wrestler with pyrotechnics owes Kane.
- Proved that unmasking a monster can work — even without the mask, he remained over.
- Showed longevity as a big man — he wrestled at a high level for over two decades.
- Successfully balanced comedy and horror — from the Brothers of Destruction to Team Hell No.
Kane was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021 (by The Undertaker). He is widely regarded as one of the best “big men” in wrestling history. Where does he rank? See our Greatest Big Men in Wrestling History and Greatest Wrestlers of All Time: Definitive Ranking.
I’m not human. I’m a machine. And you can’t stop me.
